Instrumentation in industry is a common term for measuring instruments used for indicating, measuring and memorizing physical quantities such as pressure, temperature, flow, level, etc.

Instrumentation engineering is an engineering specialization focused on the principle and operation of measuring instruments used in the design and configuration of automated systems with electrical or pneumatic control. The basic application of the instrumentation is present in automated processes such as those in chemical, petrochemical, oil, gas and other production facilities.

The target application of each instrument is to increase system productivity, reliability, safety, optimization and stability. Microprocessors, microcontrollers, PLC, DCS, ESD, and SCADA/HMI systems are used to control parameters in the process or in a particular system.

Instrumentation engineers are responsible for the integration of measuring transducers, transmitters, indicators, recorders and control systems, as well as for drawing pipeline and instrument diagrams for controlled processes (P&I diagrams). The scope of activities includes the design of the installation and wiring, and the conditioning of the measuring signals. The instrumentation engineer or technician is also responsible for the calibration, testing and maintenance of the measurement and control systems.

In oil, gas and mining industries, instrumentation devices and installations are always designed for use in explosive atmospheres. The design, manufacture, installation, maintenance and repair of measurement and control systems are technically supervised by the Ex-Agency.
