We are fully equipping the second tube of the Učka tunnel with all electrical and mechanical systems

16.2.2023

The construction of the second tube of the Učka tunnel is one of the largest infrastructure investments in Istria and currently the largest road investment in Croatia – almost 200 million euros for the construction of the second tube of the 5.6 kilometers long tunnel. We participate in the project as subcontractor of the main contractor, the construction company Bouygues Travaux Publics, specialized in infrastructure works.

Eccos is equipping the second tube of the tunnel with state-of-the-art power, lighting, signaling and ventilation equipment, fire protection, communication and video surveillance systems, as well as traffic management and signaling systems to achieve the highest standards of traffic safety in the tunnel.

The work started in December 2020, the tunnel is planned to be drilled in the summer of 2023, and the complete work should be completed a year later, in mid-2024, provided that the geological aspect is satisfactory. « The idea is to shift the traffic to the new tube at one point, to renovate the existing tunnel tube, and to open both tubes of the Učka tunnel to traffic after the summer of 2024. » said the general director of Bina Istra, Dario Silić. Bina Istra is responsible for the management and maintenance of all 145 km of the Istrian Y highway, including the Učka tunnel. « The goal is to connect with the Croatian highways at Matulji, so that you can get from Pula to Zagreb in two and a half to three hours without stopping. This is one of the busiest routes, with over 10,000 vehicles per day, » adds Silić.

By completing the project of construction of the second and renovation of the existing tube of the Učka tunnel, it will be achieved a higher level of safety for users, better traffic flow on the Kvarner side of the Istrian Y, and thus a shorter travel time.
